Project

Sao Tome

Client | International Broadcaster

Project Description

In 2005, Communications Technology Broadcasting (Pty) Ltd was appointed by an international broadcaster to undertake the replacement of a directional two tower MW antenna system in Sao Tome.
The existing towers had deteriorated to a critical level due to severe corrosion, rendering them unsafe for climbing - even for routine maintenance such as aviation light replacement.
CTB was contracted to mobilise to the island of São Tomé and execute the controlled demolition of the two 100 metre towers, followed by the design and installation of two new 100 metre towers. The replacement structures were engineering to significantly exceed the structural integrity and dimensional performance of the original installations, ensuring enhanced durability, safety and long term operational reliability.

The Challenge

To replace a corroded directional two tower MW antenna system, while maintaining operational continuity and broadcast integrity.

The Results

The project was delivered successfully, with the new tower infrastructure installed within a three-month timeframe. Throughout the entire process, the station maintained uninterrupted broadcast service, ensuring continuous coverage to its target audience without compromise

Duration

3 months

  • Scope of Work
  • Provide all labour, equipment and materials to safely demolish two 100 metre guyed masts.
  • Maintain continuous broadcast operations by implementing an interim omni-directional transmission configuration, enabling service continuity from a single mast while the second mast is sequentially demolished and erected.
  • Following this, transmission was transferred to the newly installed mast, with broadcasting maintained in an omnidirectional configuration until the second mast installation was completed.
  • Upon completion, the antenna system was reinstated to its original directional configuration.
