Project Description

In 2003, CBT was approached by the official carrier of Broadcasting signals in South Africa to evaulate and report back on the possibility of dismantling, relocating and re-installing a TCI 611 SW antenna system originally installed in the 1980's.

The Challenge

To dismantle, relocate by 2 kilometres and re-install a TCI. 611 SW antenna system originally installed in the 1980's

The Results

The project was deemed to have been a huge success, and what was thought to not be possible was achieved.

The antenna manufacture described the success as a modern engineering marvel and congratulated CTB on a job very well done.

Duration

2 years

Scope of Work

  • Lower the three SW antenna curtain arrays suspended between  four 100m lattice masts.
  • Package, transport and securely store antenna components for re-installation at a new site.
  • Dismantle four 100m lattice  masts, transport and store all structural components at the new site.
  • Dismantle approximately 100 metres  of open wire feed-line, transport and store for re-installation at the new site
  • Remove three slew switches and transport to the new site.
  • Conduct a detailed survey of the new site for antenna placement, taking into account coverage objectives and target service areas.
  • Excavate for foundations, manufacture and install foundation hardware, and complete reinforcement and concrete works.
  • Reinstall feedlines and associated systems at the new site.
  • Reinstall slew switches and horizontal feed lines
  • Conduct a detailed survey for new antenna feed line positioning and undertake all associated civil works, including reinforcement (rebar), installation of foundation hardware, formwork and concrete placement.
  • Refurbish and repair the four 100 metre lattice masts and reinstall them at the new location. Installation to be aligned with ground level conditions to replicate the original structural balance and performance characteristics.
  • Raise the 3 SW antenna curtains, ensuring that the dipoles are horizontal and the correct height from the ground.
  • Re-install the feed-line.
  • Re-install slew switches, transformers and horizontal feed-lines.
  • Install new aviation lighting and wire all lights and switches to transmitter building.
  • Test and commission antenna system.
